Do You Read to Understand Society or Escape It?

LITERARURE

Why do you read? Some people turn to books to understand society, while others read to escape it. Both choices say a lot about how you approach life, relationships, and even dating.

If you read to understand society, you’re likely drawn to thought-provoking books like George Orwell’s 1984 or Zadie Smith’s White Teeth. These novels shine a light on societal issues, exploring culture, identity, and politics. You may seek to understand the world and the people around you. In friendships and relationships, you value deep conversations and intellectual connection. You’re not afraid to face the complexity of life, and you often find fulfilment in sharing your insights with others.

On the other hand, if you read to escape, you might prefer fantasy worlds or light-hearted fiction. Novels like The Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter provide a break from the stress of daily life. You read to immerse yourself in magical lands or idealised versions of reality, where problems can be solved with a wave of a wand. This suggests you value peace and creativity. In relationships, you might prefer those who offer comfort and understanding, valuing emotional connection over intellectual debate.

Both approaches to reading—understanding society or escaping it—shape the way you think and feel about the world. They can also impact how you form relationships, whether by engaging in meaningful discussion or sharing moments of quiet retreat.

Ultimately, reading serves a unique purpose for each of us, whether it opens our eyes to society or allows us to momentarily close them and dream. How you read reflects not just your taste in books but also your approach to friendships, relationships, and the way you navigate life itself.

The Daily OR is a question that we ask our members in The Library. The answer to that question matches our members with each other, and over time they get a pretty good idea of who sees the world in a similar way to them.
