The modern age has become obsessed with visuals.
From slavishly posing for “selfies”, a term that didn’t exist until 2002, to conforming to typical notions of beauty. We buy into those notions when we swipe our choices somewhere online, led by the nose into thinking that the way we look should be the first gatekeeper to any potential interaction with each other.
As Old as the Greeks
Of course, image obsession is not a new thing – after all the ancient Greeks did give us Narcissus. Humans have always enjoyed the aesthetic appeal of nice things, to which a rich history of art, fashion and architecture can testify. It’s just that people are not things, and it feels like we still might not have learned the lesson taught by that vain Greek loner.
In The Library®, we are seeking to move away from this preoccupation with image being the portal to connection. Instead, we match our members based on the way they think and feel about the world around them. Once they connect, we encourage them to take their time messaging each other. Our members use both the Catalogue Cards and the responses to ORs as catalysts for conversation.
A Safe Community
Our aim is for our community to nurture safe and stimulating connections with other members, whilst preserving online privacy.
And, as with all good ideas, there are some extra benefits. Research tells us that writing is good for our minds, helping us to think better, feel happier and express more gratitude. So our members are encouraged to press pause on the pace of modern life. They invest some time in writing to each other, sharing thoughts, feelings, interests and loves. Not only are they building new friendships, but they are also building themselves.
